Android has platform-level HEIF support from Android 8.0, but support still varies between phone models and apps. Being able to open a HEIC file does not mean an app can export a real JPG.

Does Android Support HEIC and HEIF Files?
Android's media platform lists HEIF decoding support from Android 8.0 for .heic and .heif files, but that does not guarantee identical behavior in every app.
A modern phone may display the image in its default Gallery or Photos app while another app, browser upload field, editor, printer service, or website rejects it. Device manufacturers may also add support beyond the Android platform minimum.

- App implementation: each gallery, file manager, browser, editor, and upload form decides how it handles the format.
- File variation: a damaged file, unusual encoding profile, auxiliary image data, or cloud-only source can still fail on a device that normally opens HEIC.

Do You Need an HEIC to JPG Converter App for Android?
A separate Android app is not required when the browser workflow meets the task.
Open FormatGo in Chrome, Samsung Internet, or another compatible browser, select the image through the Android picker, and download the JPG. This avoids installing an app only for an occasional conversion.
A downloadable app may be appropriate when you specifically require offline processing, Android share-sheet integration, automatic folder watching, or another device-level feature. Do not assume that an app is more private, unlimited, or lossless without checking its actual behavior and permissions.
“Free” and “online” limits must match the live converter
File size, file count, points, retention, deletion, batch access, and processing location must be taken from the production converter rather than stated as universal Android page claims.
How to Convert HEIC to JPG on a Samsung Galaxy Phone
Samsung is covered inside this Android page because the conversion task is the same, while Gallery and Camera options vary by Galaxy model and One UI version.
- Convert an existing photo: open the browser converter, select the image from Gallery, My Files, Downloads, Google Drive, or another source shown by the Android picker, then download the JPG.
- Open an existing photo: try Samsung Gallery first. If the file does not display or another app rejects it, create a JPG copy.
- Prevent future HEIF photos: open Camera settings and check Advanced picture options for HEIF or High efficiency pictures. Turn the option off when it exists and future standard photos need a more compatible format.
Samsung menu paths are model-dependent
Samsung states that camera settings vary by model. Do not publish one path as universal for every Galaxy phone or tablet. Turning off HEIF affects future captures and does not convert existing files.
Some newer Galaxy models expose HEIF, RAW, or JPEG choices under Advanced picture options. Other models use a High efficiency pictures switch or do not expose the same setting. Check the actual Camera app on the device.
Can Google Photos Convert HEIC to JPG on Android?
Google Photos can create a separate edited copy with Save as copy, but Google does not guarantee that every HEIC source will be exported as JPEG. Check the resulting file format, or use the browser converter when a definite .jpg file is required.

Where to Find the Converted JPG on Android
After the browser download completes, Chrome normally lists the file in Downloads. Google also directs Android users to the Files app to find downloaded files.
The device may use Files by Google, Samsung My Files, or another manufacturer file manager. Open its Downloads category or search for the output filename.
A downloaded JPG may not appear immediately in the Gallery. If needed, open the file from Downloads and use the system share or move action to place it in another folder or app.
Keep the source until the result is verified
Confirm that the JPG opens correctly and is available in the required app or folder before deleting the HEIC original.

What Changes When Android Converts HEIC to JPG?
HEIC-to-JPG conversion decodes the source image and encodes a new JPEG file. It is not a filename change.
- Quality: JPEG re-encoding can introduce loss depending on the output setting and source.
- File size: the JPG may be larger or smaller than the HEIC source.
- Dimensions and orientation: verify width, height, rotation, and orientation after conversion.
- Metadata: EXIF, GPS, timestamps, color profiles, HDR, depth information, thumbnails, and other HEIF-specific data may not all be preserved.
- Compatibility: JPG is normally accepted by more websites, apps, printers, and older devices.

Troubleshooting HEIC to JPG Conversion on Android
- The HEIC file does not appear in the picker: try Files or Browse, confirm the file is downloaded locally, and verify browser permissions.
- The photo is stored only in the cloud: download the original from Google Photos, Google Drive, or the relevant cloud app before converting.
- The phone opens HEIC but a website rejects it: platform viewing support does not guarantee upload support. Create a real JPG copy.
- The Samsung camera keeps creating HEIF: check Camera settings and Advanced picture options. The setting name and location vary by Galaxy model and software version.

Do not rename .heic to .jpg
Changing the extension does not convert the image data and can make the file harder for apps to identify correctly.
